Kucinich Offers Bill to Impeach Cheney

It is bizarre how spineless most of the Democrats are on this whole issue. Kucinich is one of the few that is willing to stand up to this criminal administration.

Dodging Impeachment

by Ralph Nader

The meeting at the Jones Library in Amherst, Massachusetts on July 5, 2007 was anything but routine. Seated before Cong. John Olver (D-MA) were twenty seasoned citizens from over a dozen municipalities in this First Congressional District which embraces the lovely Berkshire Hills.

The subject-impeachment of George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney.

The request-that Cong. Olver join the impeachment drive in Congress.

More than just opinion was being conveyed to Cong. Olver, a then 70 year old Massachusetts liberal with a Ph.D. in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. These Americans voted overwhelmingly during formal annual town meetings in 14 towns and two cities in the First District endorsing resolutions to impeach the President and Vice President.

Presented in the form of petitions to be sent to the Congress, the approving citizenry cited at least four “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

They included the initiation of the Iraq war based on defrauding the public and intentionally misleading the Congress, spying on Americans without judicial authorization, committing the torture of prisoners in violation of both federal law and the U.N. Torture Convention and the Geneva Convention, and stripping American citizens of their Constitutional rights by jailing them indefinitely without charges and without access to legal counsel or even an opportunity to challenge their imprisonment in a court of law.

punditman says...Nader theorizes that since many Democrats admit in private that Bush and Cheney are the most impeachable persons ever to inherit their respective offices, yet they still won't support impeachment, then perhaps they believe that Bush is so volatile that he may launch a diversionary war on Iran to distract attention away from any criminal investigation. This means that the Democrats are likewise neglecting their responsibility to uphold the constitution of the United States.

Impeach Now--Or Face the End of Constitutional Democracy

By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS

Unless Congress immediately impeaches Bush and Cheney, a year from now the US could be a dictatorial police state at war with Iran.

Bush has put in place all the necessary measures for dictatorship in the form of "executive orders" that are triggered whenever Bush declares a national emergency. Recent statements by Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff, former Republican senator Rick Santorum and others suggest that Americans might expect a series of staged, or false flag, "terrorist" events in the near future.

Many attentive people believe that the reason the Bush administration will not bow to expert advice and public opinion and begin withdrawing US troops from Iraq is that the administration intends to rescue its unpopular position with false flag operations that can be used to expand the war to Iran.

Unimpeachably Impeachable

punditman says: With precious few in Congress willing to take the obvious next step, the Bushies will simply try to run out the clock. The fact that they may get away with it could spell the final death knell for US democracy (what's left of it).

by Ray McGovern from antiwar.com

Last week's four-part Washington Post feature on Vice President Dick Cheney removed any doubt in my mind as to whether he and President George W. Bush have committed the kinds of high crimes and misdemeanors that warrant impeachment.

While President George W. Bush bears the ultimate responsibility, the nature of the evidence against Cheney and his closest associates is so specific and overwhelming that it makes sense to impeach and bring him to trial first.

Subpoenas from Capitol Hill are flying downtown into executive office buildings like paper airplanes, but the potential for obfuscation and delay is immense, and the danger to the Republic speaks for a more urgent, simpler approach.

As hundreds are killed each day in the misbegotten war in Iraq with no end in sight, the same officials who brought us Iraq – with the vice president in the lead – are salivating for war on Iran.

There is a blizzard of possible charges warranting impeachment, and that is part of the problem. It's not only outrage fatigue, it is knowing how to sort through what Thomas Jefferson called "a long train of abuses and usurpations" to select the most heinous, when it is difficult to discern which of them most offends our Constitution and the rule of law.

Suggestion: From the most heinous, select just one for which there is ready proof – one not susceptible of the kind of diddling that has been so prevalent in Washington these past several years.

Why not focus on a high crime that the Bush administration has already admitted to, with claims it is above the law and the Constitution: electronic eavesdropping on Americans without the required court warrant.

This charge has the additional advantage of precedent. It was included in the second (of three) Articles of Impeachment voted against President Richard Nixon by a 28 to 10 vote by the House Committee on the Judiciary on July 27, 1974.

Exclusive: Secret US plot to kill Al-Sadr

The revelation of this extraordinary plot, which would probably have provoked an uprising by outraged Shia if it had succeeded, has left a legacy of bitter distrust in the mind of Mr Sadr for which the US and its allies in Iraq may still be paying.

Dr Rubai'e and other mediators started for the house. As they did so they saw the US Marines open up an intense bombardment of the house and US Special Forces also heading for it. But the attack was a few minutes premature. Mr Sadr was not yet in the house and managed to escape.
punditman says:
According to Iraqi National Security Adviser Dr Mowaffaq Rubai'e, the US tried to kill Al-Sadr while pretending to negotiate with him. There is a lesson to be learned here: when the Bush administration does negotiate, it is most often a ruse. They do not negotiate in good faith, not with their friends, not with Congress and certainly not with their adversaries. Muqtada al-Sadr, Iraq's hugely popular Shia cleric, did not have to be an enemy of the United States.

Realpolitik--politics based on practical and material factors rather than on theoretical, in advancement of the "national interest"--is not part of the neo-conservative lexicon. Instead, lying, deceiving and implementing an ideological agenda at all costs, based on narrow private interests is what they are all about. The world, especially the American people, need to wake up to this reality. Call a spade a spade and do the only honorable thing: Impeach!
