15 Best Foods to Improve Your Immunity

Peacenik was thinking about posting an article about the polls showing possible Republican gains in the 2010 congressional elections. Peacnik admits the Democrats have been woeful in stopping the wars, regulating Wall Street and passing some watered down type of universal healthcare. But to return to Congress more oleaginous Republicans, who created most of the problems that the U.S. and the world now faces, seems kinda crazy.

So instead Peacenik thought this post about nutrition and your immune system would be more useful and topical. Particularly since some Punditman readers are apparently going to avoid flu shots as the swine flu ramps up in the fall. Peacenik was particularly happy to see barley on the list of 15. Peacenik will get more beer immediately.

Healthy addictions

by Jason Bradford

I want to discuss the notion of “healthy addictions.” Really, this is an important topic. Our brain likes 'happy' chemicals and we tend to find ways to effect their release. Trouble is, we become quickly habituated to stimulation and then seek novelty in order to get that same old feeling. Our modern society gives us so many opportunities to be rewarded, but many people can’t handle it. They gradually become addicted to unhealthy things.

Topics I'll explore are: Distinguishing between healthy and unhealthy addictions. Examples of each kind. And my birthday wishes.

Background

Nate Hagens has written about the psychology, sociology and neurology behind addictive behavior, including consumerism, which is basically the process of turning high value natural capital into mostly disposable products with low or often negative marginal utility.

Peacenik thinks this is a very important topic. As the economy continues to collapse and society changes, health issues will rise to the fore. Peacenik is always trying to control Peacenik's consumer addiction. Peacenik is always tring to control Peacenik's addiction to unhealthy foods....like meat and potato chips and smart popcorn. In the near future there won't be any consumer items, and there may not be much food, so Peacenik's task will be simpler.

As for healthy addictions. Peacenik is addicted to walking. Peacenik is addicted to looking out windows. Peacenik recommends both. How about you?

Amputations Bring Health Crisis To Iraq

by- Suzie-Q @ 4:06 PM MST

Iraq is facing a hidden healthcare and social crisis over the soaring number of amputations, largely of lower limbs, necessitated by the daily explosions and violence gripping the country.

In the north of Iraq, the Red Crescent Society and the director general for health services in Mosul have told US forces, there is a requirement for up to 3,000 replacement limbs a year. If that estimate is applied across the country, it suggests an acute and looming long-term health challenge that has been largely ignored by the world.

The revelation of the scale of limb loss suffered by Iraqi civilians is not entirely surprising, even though it has gone unreported. Levels of amputations performed by military surgeons on US troops in Iraq are twice as high as those recorded in previous wars: the most recently available figures suggest 6 per cent of wounded US troops require an amputation, compared with 3 per cent in other conflicts.
