Bereaved Iraqi Mother Vows Revenge on US

By Patrick Cockburn in Baghdad
Thursday, 13 March 2008

Um Saad, a middle-aged woman living in the Sunni district of Khadra in west Baghdad, blames the Americans for the death of her husband and two of her sons and threatens revenge.

"They are monsters and devils wearing human clothes," she exclaims vehemently. "One day I will put on an explosive belt under my clothes and then blow myself up among the Americans. I will get revenge against them for my husband and sons and I will go to paradise."

Just as the White House and the Pentagon were trumpeting the success of "the surge" – the dispatch of extra American troops to Iraq last year – and the wire services' claim that the country has enjoyed "months of relative calm", Um Saad saw Saif, her second son, shot dead as he opened the door of her house.

Slaughter of the Innocents: Something is Rotten in Iraq and the Pentagon

By DAVE LINDORFF

Isn't it odd that in the air attack that the US military claims killed 19 high-ranking leaders of Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia and 15 civilians, all the slain Al Qaeda members were men and all the men were Al Qaeda, while all the civilians were women (6) and children (9)?

Think about this a minute.

This means that no women were Al Qaeda--and yet we know that women also fight, and also blow themselves up as suicide bombers. Yet these women were all civilians. The children, of course, were children.

And we're to believe that there were no men who were innocent bystanders? All those adult males who were killed were "bad guys."

Yet there were innocent bystanders: the women and the children. Somehow, any innocent bystanding men managed to duck out of the way, or the bullets and bomb fragments (and I'm sure they were fragmentation bombs that were used, as well as a withering spray of machine-gun fire) that hit all those poor women and kids, just somehow (magically?) missed the men.

Pretty amazing huh?

punditman says: Just remember: When people are cut to pieces by shrapnel, it's never the fault of the Pentagon or the US or the Bush administration or the neo-cons and their illegal, immoral war of aggression.

Is the United States Killing 10,000 Iraqis Every Month? Or Is It More?

by Prof. Michael Schwartz

While the atlantist media is reporting more than 3 000 GI’s killed in Iraq and many civilian victims of inter-confessional violences, it looks away from the daily slaughter of civilians by US patrols conducting their search operations for suspects. Professor Michael Schwartz estimates that their number reached 10 000 a month in the first 3 years of occupation. And much more since Bush ordered his surge of operations.

A state-of-the-art research study published in October 12, 2006 issue of The Lancet (the most prestigious British medical journal) [1] concluded that — as of a year ago — 600,000 Iraqis had died violently due to the war in Iraq. That is, the Iraqi death rate for the first 39 months of the war was just about 15,000 per month.

Full article

punditman says:
This may seem like a high figure at first glance--until you read the article and understand the nature of the US war in Iraq. For the past four years, the US military has conducted over 1,000 patrols every day in hostile territory. With the surge, that number has increased to nearly 5,000 per day, including allied Iraqi troops. These patrols currently mean just under 3,000 firefights every month, or just under 100 per day, plus 25 or so involving Iraqi troops. While it is true that the rules of engagement include avoiding killing civilians, hot pursuit of insurgents clearly takes precedence over civilian safety.

So why don't we hear about the appalling number of civilian deaths at the hands of the US military? Granted, it is highly dangerous for reporters to venture out into the field of operations, (to confirm these numbers), but this only partially explains the lack of reporting on this astounding level of violence. There is certainly enough evidence from official government sources and from reputable scholars and organizations to "do the math," as this writer has done. Instead, the media choose complicity. Hence the criminal enterprise that is the Iraq War continues...

Tribal Chief Says NATO Airstrike Killed 108 Afghan Civilians

punditman says:

Here we go again. The mainstream media is mostly focused on whether or not the Afghan War is worth the cost--in Western lives. But the reality is that foreign forces have been killing thousands of innocent Afghanis--men, women and children--for almost six years.
It is worth noting that as citizens, we have no say whatsoever over the military strategy that is being pursued in our names. This means that if you support the war, then you support the way it is being waged because you can't have your war and eat it too. There is to be no tinkering around the edges by Joe Sixpack, no tweaking of tactics. You don't get to say, "I support the mission, I just wish we didn't kill civilians."
Supporters of this campaign need to ask themselves why they think aerial bombardment and counter-insurgency win hearts and minds when the history of warfare teaches us that these techniques merely turn civilians against the occupier, adds to the number of foe and heightens their resolve to strike back in any way they can.

The Value of American Lives Versus All the Rest

"Sorry We Shot Your Kid, But Here's $500"

punditman says:
Consider the following US government payments:

-Families of innocent civilians slaughtered at Haditha, Iraq, by U.S. Marines received compensation of $2,500.

-Families of innocent civilians slaughtered by U.S. Marines near Jalalabad, Afghanistan received compensation of $2,000

-Families of innocent civilians slaughtered by terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001, received $1.8 million

It is no surprise then, that, when when 3 US soldiers go missing in Iraq, we get wall-to-wall network coverage around the clock.

Welcome to the modern discourse.

Airstrike reportedly kills 21 Afghan civilians
Governor says Taliban hid in villagers’ homes; coalition soldier also killed

punditman says:
The same old story, and it goes something like this: "Of course we didn't mean to, and we promise we will pay for the funerals, but we had to kill your family members because the enemy was hiding in your homes."

This is becoming so common place in both Afghanistan and Iraq, that I believe people in the West have become desensitized to the carnage. And a numb populace is incapable of acting as a responsible citizenry. One begins to think that this is precisely the idea of an endless war against an illusive enemy.
