G20 editorial: Brutal spectacle failed a city and its people

punditman says...

For Harper and Canadian government officials, it was a foregone conclusion that bringing the G20 to Toronto would mean confrontation and mayhem. It has happened at every such gathering for the last dozen years. It is bad for tourism, for the local economy, etc.  But the creation of a crisis in order to come up with the solution is an old political trick.

The predictable property damage that occurred in Toronto over the weekend by a small minority is now being used as proof that this billion-dollar-plus debacle was worth it. Meanwhile, the law and order types then applaud the government for something that never should have happened in the city in the first place. And due to the violence, all the issues that should be discussed are conveniently overshadowed.

The G20 security strategy has been spectacularly successful at cocooning the world’s leading politicians and staggeringly ineffective at protecting the property and peace of mind of Torontonians. And the one, inevitably, led to the other.

By bringing in thousands of heavily armed strangers and throwing up barricades everywhere to regular traffic, frightening off good and decent citizens, Canadian authorities created a ghost town in the heart of our city.

Perfect for the political leaders. Protesters were kept blocks away from where the deliberations were going on.

And most protesters conducted themselves faultlessly as the global good and great met behind rings of gulag-like fencing and battalions of police beating Plexiglas shields with batons in a primitive show of might.

It was, however, less than perfect for the city, its businesses and its inhabitants. The only force that can prevent vandalism and mayhem in a city is the presence of its population. Surely that was the lesson every urban planner learned from looking south to the hollowed-out urban war zones of the United States in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

G20 traffic fence can be closed at ‘a moment’s notice,’ police say

Jill Mahoney

C
onstruction of the traffic fence in downtown Toronto is finished, allowing officers to close the area to motorists at “a moment’s notice” if there is a security risk, police say.

Workers finished assembling the outer barrier surrounding the G20 summit zone on Monday morning.

“The fence is at a stage where … if we have any reason to believe there’s a security risk and we need to secure and close down that area completely, we have the ability to do that now,” said Constable Wendy Drummond, a spokeswoman for the Integrated Security Unit that is handling G20 security.

Const. Drummond said an emergency closure could happen on “a moment’s notice”. Fencing for the traffic diversion zone extends from Spadina Avenue in the west to Yonge Street in the east, and from King Street West south to Lake Shore Boulevard.

Bush tops Clinton in presidential affair

Rosie DiManno

Unprecedented! Epic! Extraordinary! Unique! Historic!

Those were just some of the adjectives tossed around by mooks in suits – thoroughly important in their own right, no doubt – who shared the emcee gig yesterday for a mano-a-mano gabfest summit featuring the last two presidents of the United States of America.

On stage together, for the first time, right here in Toronto: George Bush and Bill Clinton. Nos. 43 and 42, starring in A Conversation With Presidents.

Is Peacenik disappointed with the small turnout to protest Bush? Kind of. What Peacenik is more disappointed in is that almost 6000 Canadians wanted to pay about $200 each to listen to Bush and Clinton lie to them. And apparently Bush/Clinton were almost given a standing ovation. And Peacenik really doesn't like the fawning tone of this article and the media's coverage. But it really doesn't matter.

Bush and Clinton are part of a staus quo that is about to go kaboom. They are irrelevant. They should get their speaking fees while the getting is good. Cause society and the economy are coming unglued. The staus quo - Obama, Bush, Clinton, Harper, etc etc is sitting on a bomb. What will set that bomb off? A GM bankruptcy? 10% unemployment? An Israeli attack on Iran? Broke pension plans? Fuel shortages? Food shortages? Inflation? A terror attack? Swine flu mutating into a killer flu? A run on a major bank? There are lots of triggers. Too many to be disarmed. Boom!!

Bush still pre-screening questions at speaking events.

Throughout George W. Bush’s presidency, his handlers always made a special effort to ensure his appearances with regular Americans were scripted in such a way that shined the best possible light on Bush and his polices. Whether he was meeting troops in Iraq, leading “Ask President Bush” re-election campaign events, or trying to sell his (failed) Social Security reform plan, Bush always had a friend in the audience ready to ask a softball question or heap praise on the president. It appears that old habits die hard, as those attending Bush’s upcoming speech in Michigan will be forced to submit their questions ahead of time:

First of all the website www.protestbush.com is back online and it has been updated. The protest is today at 3 p.m. at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Peacenik already said this is a travesty, but it is also a farce. Peacenik watched the moderator for the event ,Frank McKenna, on The Hour the other night. They talked about what a "personable" guy George Bush is. Peacenik wanted to kick in Peacenik's tv screen. How will the media cover today's protest? How will the police police the protest? How many protestors will show up? 3 p.m. Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Update: The website is up but again is very slow to load.

Peacenik already noted last week that Peacenik wants to puke at the thought of Bush being welcomed to a speaking engagement in Toronto. Peacenik would be happy with an extraordinary rendition of Bush to Spain. But in the meantime Peacenik hopes that Toronto will make Bush and everyone associated with this speaking engagement regret having this event. Peacenik is also wondering if the Toronto Police are going to police this event with the same good sense they have shown when policing the Tamil protests of the past months. Not one Tamil protestor has been tasered. Will the Toronto Police be taser happy on Friday? Peacenik hopes not.

Peace ends, 15 arrested at Tamil protest

Aggression breaks out as plea for assistance in Sri Lanka continues

Apr 30, 2009 04:30 AM

Fifteen Tamil demonstrators were arrested yesterday evening after a group of protesters spilled over into a busy downtown intersection.

Police moved in as the crowd pushed forward on University Ave. to the north side of Dundas St. around 4:30 p.m.

Peacenik was at the protest yesterday around noon when a Federal NDP member was giving a speech to thousands of protesters, praising the Tamils for their peaceful occupation of one of Toronto's major streets. Peacenik didn't catch his name but he was making the point that the Tamils had every right to block University Ave.

Apparently yesterday someone's patience ran out and there were arrests. If there can't even be a peaceful protest in Toronto, what chance is there to resolve a conflict where people are dying every day?

Peacenik stopped by the protest on Peacenik's way to work this morning. About 100 protesters remain, blocking the street. They are surrounded by more than 100 police. The protest leaders were visibly apprehensive that they were about to be forceably removed from the street. As new Tamils arrived they were encouraged to step onto the street and swell the numbers blocking traffic.

Peacenik hopes the protest continues peacefully. Peacenik hopes there is a cease fire in Sri Lanka. Peacenik hopes the police continue to show patience. Peacenik hopes there is a solution in Sri Lanka and on University Ave.

Sri Lanka Civilians, Tamil Tiger Leaders Trapped in Combat Zone

By Patrick Donahue and Debarati Roy

April 25 (Bloomberg) -- Sri Lankan government forces kept up their campaign to crush the Tamil Tiger rebels as thousands of civilians remained trapped in the combat zone in the island- nation’s north, along with two top rebel leaders.

The International Committee of the Red Cross is carrying out an evacuation of the sick and wounded, said ICRC spokeswoman Sarasi Wijeratne. The Sri Lankan military said Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and intelligence chief Pottu Amman are still in the country’s northeast.

“The humanitarian situation is nothing short of catastrophic,” Wijeratne said yesterday in a telephone interview from near the capital, Colombo. Almost 6,500 civilians have been killed in fighting in the north in the past three months, the Associated Press cited a United Nations document as saying yesterday.

Peacenik just arrived at work after stopping by the Tamil Tiger protest on University Ave. in Toronto. It is raining and the number of protesters has dwindled to about 100 but Peacenik asssumes re-enforcements will arrive as the day progresses. The protest is going on in front of the U.S. Consulate and is closing one of Toronto's major north/south streets. This is the third day in a row the protesters have been on the street, non-stop.

There is also a very large and intimidating police presence. Police in full riot gear, with facemasks. Police on horse. Police on bike. Police on foot.

Peacenik confesses Peacenik has not followed the Sri Lankan civil war very closely. But Peacenik also thinks someone must have some leverage on both parties in the civil war to force some kind of settlement. Are there just too many problems in the world that no one can be bothered with the Sri Lankan civil war? Is there a right and wrong side in the civil war? Peacenik doesn't know, but Peacenik wishes the protesters all the best and hopes violence in Sri Lanka will end soon. It is time the international community helped negotiate a peaceful end to the Sri Lankan civil war.
