Nothing like deploying a bunch of cops on the streets of American cities, looking for marauding African Americans to help get out the vote:Police departments in cities across the country are beefing up their ranks for Election Day, preparing for possible civil unrest and riots after the historic presidential contest.Public safety officials said in interviews with The Hill that the election, which will end with either the nation’s first black president or its first female vice president, demanded a stronger police presence.
Peacenik is trying to imagine a worst case scenario for election day in the U.S. This post by Digby certainly illustrates some of the forces that will be at play. There will be social disorder. There will be a police over-reaction. The media will stoke the fire. The wingnut effort to delegitimize an Obama presidency has already begun. Obama will be taking over the presidency in the midst of the biggest U.S. crisis since the civil war. But Peacenik cannot see any scenario that denies Obama the prize, however tainted it is.
